SOGC/GOC Clinical Guideline #408, January 2021
Interpretation grid according to the GRADE methodological framework
| Strength of recommendations | |
|---|---|
| Forte | High confidence in the ratio between the expected benefits and the risks of the intervention, i.e. that the benefits of an intervention outweigh the risks or that the risks outweigh the expected benefits. |
| Conditional (weak) | The expected benefits of an intervention probably outweigh the risks (in favor) or the risks probably outweigh the expected benefits (against). |
| Quality of the evidence set | |
| Large | Confidence that the actual effect is close to the estimated effect. |
| Average | Moderate confidence in the estimated effect: The actual effect is probably close to the estimated effect, but it is possible that it differs substantially. |
| Weak | Limited confidence in the estimated effect: The actual effect could be substantially different from the estimated effect. |
| Very low | Very little confidence in the estimated effect: The actual effect is probably very different from the estimated effect. |

- Conditional (weak) recommendations should not be misinterpreted as inconclusive data or uncertainty regarding the recommendation.
Evaluation and interpretation of recommendations , by target audience
| Evaluation or interpretation | Strong recommendation, "We recommend...", "We recommend not..." | Conditional recommendation: "We suggest...", "We suggest not..." |
|---|---|---|
| Evaluation by the directive committee | It is evident to the committee that the expected net effects of one strategy outweigh the effects of the alternative strategy. | It is less obvious to the committee whether the expected net effects of one strategy outweigh the effects of the alternative strategy. |
| Consequences for patients | Most people in this situation would want the recommended action plan followed; few people would not. | Most people in this situation would like the suggested action plan to be followed, but many would not. |
| Consequences for clinicians | Most people should undergo this procedure | Clinicians must recognize that different choices will be indicated for each patient and that they must help each person make a decision that respects their values and preferences. |
| Consequences for decision-makers | This recommendation can be implemented as a policy in most situations. Adherence to this recommendation, as defined by the clinical guideline, can serve as a quality criterion or performance indicator. | Policy development will require the participation and extensive debate of various stakeholders. |
